Why You Might Be Seeking a Therapist
A therapist can help with many stages of life. Some of the most common reasons to speak to a therapist include:

Different Kinds of Counselors and Therapists

Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist will usually have the initials MD or DO after their name. They will have trained as a physician before specializing in mental illnesses. As a medical doctor, they can prescribe medication and also perform therapy.
Psychologist
A Psychologist typically has the initials PhD or PsyD after their name, although they may have several other certifications. They are someone that has a PhD in clinical or child psychology, who treats people with mental concerns. They may perform avaluations, testing, or custody reports.
Marriage and Family Therapist
A marriage and family therapist usually has the initials MFT afer their name, and are trained to work with people having relational issues. MFTs can work with one person, couples, families, or in groups.
Licensed and Clinical Social Worker
A licensed and clinical social worker will usually have LCSW after their name. They can perform therapy, and work with agencies or networks as a support person for families.
Pastoral Counselor
Pastoral counselors may have several abbreviations after their name, such as CCPT, CpastC, or others. They can help with personal and family problems within a spiritual context.
Mediator
Mediators may have NCPM after their name, and they help people resolve disagreements of many kinds.
Hypnotherapist
Certified hypnotherapists will often have CH-C after their name, and can help with specific goals, such as weight loss or stopping smoking, using hypnosis.
